In close collaboration with Ro&Ad architects, an integrated design was developed where interior and exterior merge seamlessly. Visitors descend through a rising field amidst the trees directly adjacent to the cemetery. The memory of the Canadian liberators who found their final resting place here is reflected in the design: the felled trees are present as reminders in the form of holes in the surface. Military equipment—tank, truck, and bomber—have their imprints in the underground earthen wall. A three-dimensional impression of the Scheldt region in the floor of the space serves as the foundation for a projected narrative. Through tubes extending from the wall, visitors are connected to the buried: they contain personal objects and spoken stories. An open space with trees serves as a memorial center.
