The invasion of Brielle by the Geuzen in 1593 marked the end of the 80-year war and the beginning of the Dutch state. Attention is paid to this in various ways throughout the fortified city. At the site of the invasion, bastion IX, various historical figures talk about the day of the invasion via an interactive display around a model of Den Briel: not everyone celebrated that day. The vanished North Gate through which the Geuzen entered the city has been depicted in a contemporary object by Ro&Ad architects and comes to life via interactive lighting, text and music. On the so-called Geuzen and Martyrs Route, which connects the gate with the place where the barn stood where 19 clergymen were hanged, you will come across various striking statements about the meaning of freedom. These ‘Martyrs of Gorcum’ are commemorated at the church that stands near the site of the former barn. An interactive cannon on bastion IV draws attention to the historical defence of Den Briel. At the entrances to the city, city maps have been applied to the pavement, marking the sights in the city. New signage has been installed and information is provided via signage at various locations in the city.
