The monumental dry dock Jan Blanken is located at the head of the historic harbour of Hellevoetsluis. In the glory days of Dutch shipping, the harbour served as the ‘Lands rijkswerf’. The shed by architect Gunnar Daan, located next to the dry dock, has been transformed into a museum shed with 3 themes: the history of Hellevoetsluis is told in a three-dimensional timeline, the maritime history of the harbour in the 19th century comes to life via virtual animations in a monumental historical model from the collection of the Rijksmuseum and in the interactive workshop ‘The Iron Age’ children can experience first-hand what the transition from wood to steel construction meant for the navy. There are hands-on interactives about, among other things, caulking, forging, scaling up and navigating.
